One of the most commonly asked questions…

You're scrolling through social media and you come across a bad ass pole video!

The artist starts off by smoothly moving against gravity, hair flying in the wind and lifting their body off the ground; they start to climb hand over hand with the most beautiful posture, dancing and climbing simultaneously; they very methodically hook their leg in what must be the perfect place because they grab a hold of the pole in a shape you have seen in a ballet; then suddenly they make some adjustments you can’t understand unless you re-watch the video several times, and before you know it they extend both legs vertically but in opposite directions until they form a flat split with their chest high and hips close to the pole. They are holding the silhouette for what seems like an eternity. You wonder how they are going to get out of this trick???

Then the onlooker asks, “Does the pole spin?”

The short answer is yes. But it also has a static mode as well. Depending on what the artist is presenting would dictate if the artist chose to execute the move on spinning or stationary.

When the combo is performed on spin the intention is to see the dominant angle of the shape for many rotations.

On the static pole you have to have the strength and coordination to throw your body weight around to create momentum, maintain negative space between your body and the pole and hold on for as long as necessary so that your audience can see the shape you’re presenting.

On spin mode you are basically in an isometric pull up in a beautiful shape and ideally you're trying to not slide down and lose any height unless the artist is trying to create a descending look. On static, it is very respected in the pole world to generate your own momentum, especially at the top of the pole to create dynamic movement. Both modes are challenging in their own ways and require the skills and knowledge in order to create effortless appearing pole art.
